ABC Learning LabOur Philosophy

learning-lab2

It is important to keep your child’s mind engaged. Just like sports, reading and math skills must be trained everyday in order to get better. If your child stops practicing basketball for 3 months, they will not be able to make their layups, hit the outside shot or dribble past the defender as easily. The same idea works with the skills your child learns in school. ABC Pilsen offers them the opportunity to work out their brain along with the rest of their bodies, so they don’t go back to school rusty!

Summer Weekend League Academics

During the Summer Weekend League, participants must complete an hour of supplemental academic work before or after their practice sessions on Saturday in order to participate. There are four options, and a student must choose to commit to one over the entire summer session or choose to move between all four options.

HTML and CSS Based Web Development

Students will get directly into the weeds developing their own websites for a variety of different goals each student wants to pursue. It is entirely their prerogative to decide what they would like to build, and are both taught and guided (based on age and skill level) to make their own websites. Everything they build is open and pushed to the internet for everyone to see.

All websites are available here: https://s-cavalier.github.io/abc-pilsen-main/

Photography

Students get hands-on with cameras to learn both how to use the different settings on a camera and different techniques for using the camera itself. They are shown how to manipulate certain angles, lighting, and possibly even editing techniques that all culminate into their pictures. A gallery of examples from the students that participated is available below!

Art

Art class in ABC Pilsen brings the creative side of our athletes! This summer, we are making custom tote bags and t-shirts. We began the process of brainstorming and designing on paper, then bringing those designs to life! The goal is to help athletes think outside the box by adding the component of creating templates with painters tape. Some of our athletes created the Chicago Skyline for their design, thus, inspiring others to get even more creative!

Chess

The goal of the ABC Chess Club is to teach and offer a safe and fun environment to play and learn chess. Students will enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving, strategy and visualization skills while playing and learning chess. Students can then use those skills on the basketball court or in the classroom. All levels are welcomed.

The ABC academic program begins July 10th.

Participants can choose any of the options in their age category to complete the academic requirements.  Participation in at least one option is required.  Coaches will check weekly with parents and teachers to determine eligibility to play.
